For acute strains which happen in sudden and unexpected, it is often due to:

These strains can cause pain, bruising, swelling and may limit movement within the affected muscle group. Mild to moderate strains can be successfully treated at home with ice, heat, and anti-inflammatory medication, and symptoms usually may go away within a few weeks. Severe strains or tears may require medical treatment and take months to heal.
