Ligaments are short bands of tough, flexible tissue, made up of collagen fibres, which connect the bones of the body together. Ligaments can be found nearly at all joints from the body, and their function is to provide a passive limit to amount of movement at your joints.

Ligaments can be sprained or torn away from the bone when a joint is over-stretched beyond its normal range during fast and sudden movement occurred at this joint, e.g. high impact sports. Common causes of a ligament injury include twisting or landing awkwardly, and knee and ankle are the most common joints with high risk of ligament injury.

The symptoms of torn ligament included:

  • Sudden onset of pain, bruising and severe swelling
  • Subsequent joint instability
  • Risk of recurrent torn of the same ligament
  • Impaired function e.g. can’t walk, run or weight-bear
